Sela Pass is a famous high-altitude mountain pass in Arunachal Pradesh, India, sitting at an elevation of 13,700 feet (4,170 meters). Known as the “Gateway to Tawang,” it serves as a critical route on National Highway 13 connecting the Tawang and West Kameng districts. The area is celebrated for its stunning Himalayan landscapes, religious significance, and strategic military history.

Key Features

• Sela Lake: Also called Paradise Lake, this beautiful water body sits near the summit. It is one of 101 lakes in the area considered deeply sacred in Tibetan Buddhism and to the local Monpa people. It completely freezes over during the harsh winter months.
• The Sela Tunnel: Inaugurated in March 2024, this engineering marvel is the longest bi-lane tunnel in the world at an altitude above 13,000 feet. It ensures all-weather connectivity, bypassing heavy snow zones and shortening travel time to Tawang by about 10 kilometers.
• Jaswant Garh War Memorial: Located nearby, this site honors Baba Jaswant Singh Rawat, a brave Indian soldier who single-handedly fought off enemy forces during the 1962 Sino-Indian War. Local legends say his spirit still guards the border.

• Best Time to Visit: The optimal months are April to October for pleasant weather and clear views. The shoulder winter months of early December and late April offer magical snowscapes.
• Required Permits: Because it is in a sensitive border region, all tourists must obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Indian citizens or a Protected Area Permit (PAP) for foreigners before entering Arunachal Pradesh. [1]
